Research over the past two decades provides strong evidence that physical interactions involving mechanical forces, electric potentials, chemical gradients, and statistical phenomena play an important role in the way biomolecules and cells interact with their surroundings. To study these processes, we are establishing the Max-Planck-Zentrum für Physik und Medizin (MPZPM) to bring together physicists, mathematicians and biomedical researchers under one roof.
ZPM is conceived as a joint effort between the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light (MPL), the Friedrich Alexander University (FAU) and the FAU University Hospital in Erlangen. The new scientific center aims to apply advanced methods from experimental physics and mathematics to basic biomedical research with an emphasis on the intercellular microenvironment. A generous initial support of 60 million Euros from the State of Bavaria is allocated for putting up a new building on the campus of the University Hospital.
On the MPL side, MPZPM will host a new (fifth) division and some of the activities of other MPL divisions who are engaged in biomedical research. The FAU will be represented by three Chairs in biophysics, biomathematics and medical physics. In addition, two independent research groups (equivalent to nontenure-track assistant professorship) will be financed by the Max Planck Society and the FAU University Hospital, while three other such groups will be hosted based on external funding.
