Spatial properties of high-gain parametric down-conversion

We present the theoretical description of far-field spatial features and photon-number correlations in high-gain parametric down-conversion. In contrast to the previous works on this problem, our approach is fully analytical. Using the formalism of Bloch-Messiah reduction, we introduce the angular Schmidt modes and obtain the corresponding photon-creation operators. As a result, we calculate analytically all measurable quantities, such as the angular distribution of the intensity and various correlation characteristics (covariance, second-order correlation function, etc). The obtained theoretical results are in a good agreement with the properties of high-gain parametric down-conversion observed in the experiments performed in MPL. Different configurations of nonlinear crystals are examined. The possibility of predominant generation of only a single spatial Schmidt mode is discussed. The results allow extension to the frequency domain.
