Quantum-enhanced interferometry with path-symmetric states of light

Quantum-enhanced interferometry promises phase estimation below the shot-noise limit via the generation of modal entanglement. We discuss a necessary condition on all modal entangled states, which are capable of sub shot-noise phase sensitivities in conventional interferometry with photon number detection, namely that the states have to be symmetric under an exchange of paths. We show that the optimal phase sensitivity of such states is also achievable with photon number parity measurements.
