Gerd Leuchs, director of the division “Optics & Information” at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light, was elected Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He has been an Alexander von Humboldt Lecturer in Russia, one of the organizers of the Russian/German Laser Symposium Series, and chair of the ICONO/LAT conference. He has ties with Moscow's Lomonosov State University, the Russian Quantum Center and the Institutes of Laser Physics in Novosibirsk, Applied Physics in Nizhny Novgorod, Spectroscopy in Troitsk, and Chemistry in St. Petersburg State University.

The research of Gerd Leuchs` division at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light spans a wide range from classical to quantum optics, as well as from fundamental questions to applications. Some groups concentrate on the spatial structure of the light field including optics design, optical sensors, and polarisation optimization e.g. in focusing light. Others study the temporal characteristics of light including quantum noise manipulations or generation of single photons and of quantum entangled states.
