Current research / employment
We developed a method for studying the electric and magnetic properties of single sub-wavelength nano-structures. For instance, this technique can be used to investigate the optical properties of building-blocks for metamaterials. For testing the method we have exposed a single split-ring resonator (SRR; see Fig. a) exhibiting different types of resonances to highly focused and polarization tailored light (e.g. a y-polarized TEM10 mode; see Fig. b). The existence of longitudinal magnetic (on-axis) as well as transverse electric and magnetic field components (off-axis) which are formed in the focal plane (see Fig. b); y-component of electric field shown only) allows us to control the direction and order of the induced electric and magnetic multipoles. By recording the reflection (and transmission) signal for different positions of the SRR relative to the beam in the focal plane we gather information about the coupling in different coupling scenarios. Furthermore, we measure the emission of the excited nano-structure to get further insight into the tested resonance types.
