Abstract of IMPRS project(s)

The department of image processing and medical engineering of the Fraunhofer IIS has a long tradition using specialized optics and imaging devices for various applications with in biomedical image processing scenarios.

Current research and development activities are concentrated on the exploration of image analysis methods for automatic and interactive segmentation, characterization, classification, interpretation and computer assisted diagnosis (CAD) of mono- and multi-modal acquired micrographs of cells and tissues, as well as images obtained from endoscopy, dermatology or mammography.

Projects in the field of computer-assisted microscopy (CAM) deal with the research and development of an analysis system for an automated white blood cell count (WBC), early malaria detection, bone marrow analysis, cervical cell analysis, digital pathology, image analysis of fluorescent micrographs as well as virtual slide technologies.

In the field of computer assisted diagnosis, methods for the image-based characterization and interpretation of malign and benign tissues depicted in mammographs, as well as endoscopic and dermatoscopic images are explored. Further research in this area deals with the panoramic imaging (stitching) of endoscopic images as well as methods of endoscopic image augmentation.
